Blog Post #1 Due Wednesday 8/24
·        Write a brief blog post (250 words min) about your perspective of pop culture. You should present a main idea about pop culture and support it with a few examples. You can, of course, includes pertinent links, but are not required to do so. I suggest writing clear, direct sentences to explain your position. Brainstorm before you begin. You can take this post in any direction you’d like, but here are a few questions you can use to get going:
  • ·        Does pop culture have a positive or negative influence on American society?
  • ·        Are some genres/forms of pop culture better for us than others?
  • ·        What areas or genres of pop culture interest you the most?
  •      What do you want to learn in this class?
  •      Lastly, what's a clever name for this blog?

  1. In my opinion pop culture can have both a positive and negative influence on society, but in todays society I would say it's more negative. Vulgarity, violence and sex are promoted everyday in music/movies/shows. I think we have also lost a sense of romance, or relationships, due to pop culture. This generation has been taught that it is not cool to have a real relationship or that it's normal to have multiple partners. This is shown in movies, tv shows, with athletes and many other celebrities. I think the biggest thing with this generation is that we've lost the ability to think for ourselves. Everyone is so worried about fitting in and having all the right things that we lose control of who we really are. People like the Kardashians and other reality stars have taken over and you see them everywhere. America is more worried about Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift drama than anything else. Social media could be such a good thing for us, but we abuse it and let all the wrong things become important.

    1. I completely agree that we have lost a sense of romance and relationships due to pop culture. Its so easy to see that everyday. Fitting in does seem to be the new trend too.

    2. I agree in today's culture people appear to have lost the ability to think for themselves instead they focus more on keeping up with the latest trends like dances, memes, and anything that would keep them in the loop. Romance isn't the same no more it's probably why people are becoming transgender, lesbians, or gay because they don't know what else to do. Also, probably the reasons why people are more sexually provocative.

    3. I think that you have to look at all forms of pop culture to say that it has killed romance. For me, in pop culture something much more important happened. We started making movies with female characters that aren't simply love interests, but instead their own person. Yes hip hop music, along with other genres, simply sexualize women, but I think that there is also something else going on. We are looking more and more at women as individuals and I love that. You wrote an interesting post though. Enjoyed reading it.

  2. Personally, I think pop culture is a representation of modern culture and the values of today’s society. It is evident that there have been changes to society and social interaction through the comparison of today’s society to one of the past, but most of these changes have negatively impacted us and have led away from traditional values such as respect, integrity, and modesty. This is why I believe pop culture is generally negative, especially in today’s society. Videos and images we allow to become popular through social media and the internet, such as Drake’s Hotline Bling music video, prove that the pop culture of today portrays the idea that women should be treated in a more negative way and alludes to the fact relationships and social interactions between genders have become more superficial and focused primarily on physical interaction. I think some genres or forms of pop culture can be more beneficial or better for us than others. An example being social media, we control what becomes popular and what remains irrelevant. If we decided to allow pictures and videos that promoted better ideals and morals to become more popular than their counterparts then the pop culture would be better and more beneficial. I am interested in film and how it is used to portray ideas and values even though it can be borderline subliminal as we pay attention to the story and not necessarily the message that is presented. In this class, I hope to learn how to correctly analyze different forms of pop culture and develop my writing all together. A clever name for the blog could be “Hotline Blog,” since we are focusing on pop culture.

    2. I agree with just about everything. We do control what becomes popular to a certain extent. Some things celebrities make popular and we just follow suit, in other words follow the trend.

  3. I believe that pop culture can have a negative and a positive influence on American society, it depends on how you interpret the topic. I think that pop culture can have a bad influence on children. I believe that most pop culture now is to vulgar and promotes violence. On the other hand, some pop culture can have a big influence on children today, it can show them that they can do anything they set their minds to. Pop culture or celebrities can have a big influence on what teenagers or people in general buy or wear. If a famous person is wearing or “promoting” his or her clothing brand most people are going to want to go and buy that brand because its cool. Some genres of pop culture are better than others, but I believe it is all in how you view it. I think that a lot of pop culture is influenced by money and what the media thinks that “we” want to hear or see. I really like TV/movies, I would say that is my favorite area of pop culture. I think that TV is the biggest form of pop culture and has the biggest influence on people. I would love to learn more about how to breakdown and understand the meanings of some pop culture and what they are really trying to say. I believe there is always an underlining meaning to everything defiantly the media. Lastly I think a good name for this blog would be, “Mr. Emilio’s 1st blog.” Attached is an article that talks about the influence that pop culture has on teenagers.

    1. Jason, I agree that pop culture has a significant influence on the items and clothes we buy to be "cool," and I also agree that the media does in a sense control what we are subjected to and what we should be worried about. I like the link you attached as it has some good insight on how teenagers are effected by pop culture.

  4. Pop culture has both a negative and a positive influence on American society. People can connect with each other with the different topics that come from pop culture; therefore, it is useful in connecting different people together. Music is one important part of pop culture and I think it has one of the greatest influences on society, especially the younger generation. Individual songs either have a positive or negative influence on people, not a genre that it belongs to. For example, Beyoncé’s song “Pretty Hurts” has a positive influence because the lyrics exemplify the emphasis we put on appearances and reassures the listener that their appearance is not the problem but their confidence and society’s views are. However, Rick Ross’ song “You Don’t Even Know It” is a negative influence because of one specific verse that he uses in the song that suggests he drugs women before he takes them back to his home and “enjoys them”. Those two songs are different genres, but not every song in the same genre as the songs mentioned have the same influence. I think music interests me more than any area of pop culture, but I also like to comment on movies and different television shows. I want to learn how to write effective papers that will get me an A in this class. I struggled trying to think of a name for the blog, but I definitely think it should have the word “pop” in it.

    1. I think that music is the biggest influence in pop culture. I agree that it's not really certain genres but more so the different songs that can be either negative or positive. Some artists lean towards certain topics for their music but others can leave mixed feelings with each song.

  5. Pop Culture’s influence on America has undoubtedly had some negative effects on society, however, pop culture is actually quite positive. People are able to control what becomes a part of pop culture and what will not be included. Television shows such as The Walking Dead, Empire, and Stranger Things play an essential part in shaping pop culture. With millions of viewers watching these primetime shows creates a sense of unity. Media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, serve as a bridge to connect with people from all over the world. When using Twitter, people are able to “tweet” with family, friends, associates and complete strangers to inadvertently create a community filled with other like-minded individuals. Each person brings their own unique comment, question or funny remark and develops bonds with people who are unfamiliar to them. American pop culture also shows how diverse America truly is. America has various styles of music, art, television shows and other mediums of expression that depict just how great America is. Music can express emotions that people all across the world can relate to. Joy, sadness, and anger are some of the emotions that can be portrayed through an artist’s music. This music is able to comfort and encourage listeners. Pop culture is able to show just how great America’s freedom of expression is. Pop culture may have some drawbacks, but it is able to connect people to others who share the same ideas. Focusing on the negative effects of pop culture can blind the general public to all the good that pop culture has to offer.

    1. One thing which I love about social media, is that its an output of what you want, be it creativity, self obsession, or just whatever you want. One problem I have with social media as a whole is how pervasive it is now. We are almost constantly consuming social media and the fact that most forms of social media is being used to flaunt their life instead of just sharing their experiences and life events seems to be a side effect from the influences of mainsteam pop culture

  6. Pop culture has been around for a long time, but I think that it has such a huge impact on our generation especially because of our easy access to media. Regardless of whether it is good or bad, we always have access to the latest stories on either our phone or computer, etc. Pop culture provides more than just entertainment to us though, it provides inspiration. For me, it provides inspiration in the realm of fashion and body positivity. We see celebrities like Ashley Graham find success as a plus sized model for victoria's secret, or staring in DANCE's music video, and girls of all sizes can relate to her. So, in that form Pop Culture provides a positive outlook on body positivity; however, it has not always been this way. In early 2000s, popular opinion leaned heavily towards supporting stars and celebrities, especially models, who appeared to be underweight. So, for me this access to media, and who we as a society view as “pretty” has had a strong impact on my life. On the favorable side, huge strides have been made in the media where celebrities discuss their struggles. More recently Demi Lovato has come out to say she struggled with eating disorders throughout her life.. When young girls who struggle with the same problems see this being something that one of their favorite singers can overcome, they feel inspired to follow suit. So clearly Pop culture can be neither defined as positive or negative, because it is just far too broad of a spectrum. We could name the blog “POPulation CULTivation”, because of the effects that pop culture has on producing a mass effect on the world.

    1. Body positivity is definitely an important thing and has also had a great impact on my life. I really didn't think of pop culture being neither negative or positive but I see your point.

    2. I agree with you, I think that the new fad of "plus sized" girls becoming the face of multiple platforms is such an empowering movement. It's allowing pop culture to positively impact the way we view others and ourselves.

    4. There is a positive side to every negative but does it out weigh they negative it has done? Why are their eating disorders, low self esteem; because people are influenced by what they see on tv, and are judged or bullied into thinking they need to be just like the idols they see.

  7. Pop Culture has a positive and a negative influence on the American Society. I believe that pop culture used to have a positive influence back in the day versus what you hear in today’s generation. There were many well established artists, such as Tupac, Biggie Smalls, DMX, Lauryn Hill etc. that believed in expressing the truth throughout their music. They felt as though it was a refreshing way to express their point of view to whomever wanted to listened. I do understand that there are some artists that are still surviving in today culture and receiving good feedback such as Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, Lil Wayne, etc. I believe that without these artist’s today’s generation are lost in the negative influence that focus more on irrelevant subjects like sexuality, drugs, and random ad libs. When some people focus on these kinds of things they lose sight on what is really significant. There are some people today that rather listen to music that are irrelevant because it boosts their adrenaline when we just want to get through our daily routines or have fun. I don’t believe that any genre/form outweighs each other they are all different in their own way it just up to how you decide whether not music intrigues you to keep listening. I feel I am really open-minded when it comes to different kinds of genre of pop culture but if I was to choose what I find most interesting, it would be old school music. I would like to learn others perspective on what they believe and anything that would help me improve my writing.

    1. I myself do not usually listen to mainstream music, but instead more OST's of tv shows or movies, or music without lyrics in addition to peoples remixes of certain songs or video game soundtracks. But when I do this mainly because its easier for me to relax with these musics. Faster bpm songs for getting into the groove of working steadily, and slower songs to relax, all without any influence besides how the melody and harmonies are created and in what way.

  8. I believe that pop culture has a negative influence on American society. I think that the biggest and most popular genres or forms of pop culture, are very harmful, that being the two music genres Pop and Hip-Hop. For example not only do the lyrics of many popular songs like Rihanna’s Bitch better have my money, and Drake’s Hotline Bling promote bad messages, but the accompanying music videos promote even worse messages. In Drake’s case, the music video of Hotline Bling exploded in popularity and became viral in part of Drake’s ridiculous dance moves. I believe this method of getting increased exposure is very common, in addition to the multitude of bad messages and lyrics that promote violence, various types of inequality, promiscuity and moral ambiguity.

I believe there are other forms and genres of pop culture that are better for us such as creative and informative videos, or pirate-themed music such as alestorm. These genres usually have a smaller and narrower target demographic or are a very niche community.

One area of pop culture that interests me the most is the Internet Memes. Not only does this take creativity to different levels, it also embodies different parts of the internet that create icons of their pop culture. One example of this is a video called “Hillary Clinton: Meme Queen 2016” https://youtu.be/aoXDe8HxHBA which cultivated various memes and internet references from present day to ones all the way from 6+ years ago. Some of these memes, or internet pop culture, are collected from YouTube, Twitch, Imgur, Vine, and other types of social media. And albeit some of these memes are far-fetched and sometimes ridiculous, it still promotes better messages such as creativity and originality, one of the very limited things in created content on these social media. Each one of these social media sites have their own “memes” such as Imgur’s Giraffe, Sarah, and ANewBadlyPhotoshoppedPhotoofMichaelCeraEveryday, while Twitch has their Emoticons such as Kappa, PPMD Kreygasm and PogChamp.

I don’t know what to expect to learn in this class but I can guess that we could learn how pop culture gets created, spread, and how it affects our daily lives. I think a Clever Name for the blog could be: Student Analysis on Pop Culture and Media, or SAP-CaM, in reference to how much we love saps and videos.

  9. Pop culture is one of the most relevant ways of starting and spreading new ideas within our society. Due to the growth of social media over the years, pop culture has evolved significantly. Pop culture and social media have such an influence on our generation these days because it is so accessible. Everywhere you go you see five year olds glued to Iphone screens and children replacing their bikes with Ipads. Unfortunately, not every trend on social media has a positive impact. One example of this can be shown through trending music videos, like the one that we watched in class (Hotline Bling). With children having such easy access to social media, it is becoming common for these ideas to be engraved into their brains. As a result, children are being raised with morals that are unjust. On the other hand, social media provides platforms for people to come together in support for different causes. For example, there are many groups on social media such as twitter that advocate for things like feminism, the black lives matter movement, and other relevant issues in today’s society. What I noticed in class by watching the three different music videos, was that different genres of music can portray different things. For example, it isn’t very common for a jazz musician to include half naked women in his/her music video but a rap music video would apparently barely be complete without that in this day and age. I think what interests me most about pop culture is the way that it has evolved within the past five to ten years. I really would like to learn about why pop culture has such an influence on the way that people think and act.

    1. Your point on social media is a good one and I agree, however I don't think the five year olds with their eyes glued to a screen is a positive result of pop culture. Parents should be more informed about what their kids are accessing rather than throwing them an expensive toy simply to make them be quiet.

  10. To me pop culture is made up of anything current, from music to movies, that is largely consumed. I think mass media has the biggest influence over what we as a people chose to place in the pop culture category. I also believe that the influences pop culture has on society depends on how people channel what they receive. For example, police brutality, as tragic and gut wrenching of a topic as it is, it's an aspect of pop culture that has brought so many people together in a positive way. Different races, religions and social groups all have joined forces to think of ways to make a change. But on the flip side pop culture is hypersexuzalized, from reality tv to Instagram, the underdressed are over promoted. I think this causes people to have inferiority complexes in some ways because they try to live up to the images perpetuated in everything they are exposed to. I don't think any particular genre is generally better for or more beneficial than another because I think it has so much to do with the personalities of the people that consume it. So for me music is the forerunner in that race but movies and tv are tied for second. I'm excited to further explore the topic and hear what everyone else thinks about it, because it's always fun to hear perspectives that you haven't before.
As for the name of the blog, I'd have to go with the person who suggested ‘Hotline Blog’ it's cute.

  11. I believe pop culture has positive and negative influences on the American society. However, currently there is a lot of negative influence that is occurring in America. A lot of television, social media, and music portray violence, drugs, and a sexual view of women. These are things that we really should try to avoid because they can create a lack of respect and loyalty, especially in relationships. It also creates a lot more disrespect and crime among people in a community and almost makes it impossible for people to want to come together. On the other hand, there are some parts of pop culture that are positive influences on the society. Things like Drake's "Started from the Bottom Now We Here" can portray the idea that you don't have to start off wealthy to be successful. It shows that with hard work you can go from rags to riches as longs as you are willing to put in the effort. This is what a lot of pop culture has said can’t happen. Music has a lot of power in a society because so many people hear it and, with the right words, can bring a lot of positive influences. That is why it is one of my favorite areas of pop culture. Also, I would like to get a better writing ability out of this class, so that I can be further prepared to do well in future classes. I think a good name for this blog would be "poppin blog". It’s not such a good name, but I couldn't really think of anything.

  12. I was so upset when I heard our class was based on pop culture "rather than poetry", or something else worth learning about instead of reminiscing about (eventually I suppose). I try to avoid pop culture as it is the most thinly veiled conduit of conformity in our society, and generally has negative effects. Pop culture quite often involves vulgarity, unrealistic expectations, materialism, and violence among a number of other distasteful behaviors.
I suppose I shouldn't be too put-out to learn about pop culture since it's a subject new to me, and therefore has unlimited potential for growth, but as of right now I still would prefer the poetry. Change my mind Greg, make this semester interesting.

    2. I agree that pop culture contains all of those negative traits; however, I also think pop culture has a strong potential to make a change in the world in a positive way. It can inspire change on a larger scale. Beyonce released her new album that inspires the black lives matter campaign and the fight against police brutality. Pop culture doesn't have to be so shallow. I am also excited to see how this semester warps my views on the subject.

      Delete
    3. I completely understand where you're coming from with your disappointment. However, our current pop culture is just as important as the classic poetry we consider to be our most valuable, historic art now. In the future, it will be our music, art, books, and movies that are studied in school. It is important that we as a society leave behind valuable content. Although a majority of our pop culture, such as the much discussed "Hotline Bling", doesn't hold the best messages, we must find the pop culture that DOES.

      Delete
    4. Xander, I appreciate your honesty here. As a poet myself, I'd love to run a whole course on contemporary poetry, but I don't because I've learned that it's not the best fit for 1102. However, I'd like to convince you that pop culture is worthy of academic inquiry. The point of this class is to better understand the world in which we live, and to better articulate those insights in writing. This is also the goal of poetry. A great challenge for us is to try and figure out why we gravitate toward, and consume, media that is often toxic to us. Where did we go wrong? Or, we might consider the opposing argument, which is that pop culture is actually good for us. This is a complex, multi-faceted issue that’s going to take a lot of critical thinking (and watching and listening and reading and writing) just to scratch the surface. But, if we keep our minds open, and remember that learning about each other is always a positive thing, this study of popular culture will be worth it. I’ll even try to sneak in some poems.

  13. Pop culture can be seen as both a positive and negative in today's society. Positively, pop culture can influence younger generations to do better things such as Play 60, an initiative to get children to exercise more often. In a negative aspect, pop culture also promotes things like gun and drug culture with rappers such as 21 Savage and Chief Keef, both of whom primarily focus rapping about doing various drugs and shooting any rivals in their paths. While hip hop seems to be a main part of pop culture that promotes negative ideas, hip hop artists such as Eminem and Tyler, the Creator both have spoken on their albums that their lyrics do not reflect them as a person and add in that anyone listening should not copy any of the actions that the respective rappers talk about. While music brings both negative and positive aspects, all other genres of pop culture seem to be as equally good and bad. Movies and television are also filled with drug use, sex, and violence just like music. The genre of pop culture that I hold the most interest in would be a tie between comic books and music, primarily hip hop/rap or rock. I hope to learn how to become more analytical of pop culture around me in hopes that I'll be able to generate more conversations/debates on trending topics instead of discussing pop culture primarily at face value. As for a clever blog title...Snoop Blogg.

  14. To me, Pop culture is about knowing what is going to sell to the consumers that is the new generation. I like to think that pop culture is doing bad and good at the same time for everyone. People are becoming more attached to their mobile device more than ever before and because of that, we simply miss out on a lot of different experiences. It's also found a way to influence or affect anyone that is prone to it. Some way somehow, everybody comes into contact with the current pop culture; it doesn't matter what you're into or what you like, you're going to be seeing pop culture everywhere around you.

    2. (Add on)
However, we tend to create the problem with how the media chooses to portray the pop culture and tweak it to make a simple story into a complete waste of time in my opinion. Sure there is some pop culture that actually has meaning to it and sure it can be considered and arguably a better option than the majority vote, but that still doesn't mean anything when the media chooses to promote things that can be considered "guaranteed" money. Think about it, why take the risk of trying to create a new idea that has never been seen or heard of before instead of making money off an old idea (a majority of scary movie films, Cheaper by the Dozen, Batman, TMNT, etc.)
You know that the old idea made money, with merchandise and all, so you can then realize that it's less risky and probably cheaper than actually trying something new. So a main negative aspect is that I think it limits our creativity. It would take a lot of convincing to any producer that the next big thing is right there at his fingertips, not to mention having to go through so many of them just to even listen to your new idea.

So in all, Pop culture is just something in the background of everyone's lives in order to keep them up to date of what the latest trend is. Or shall I say what the media thinks it should be.

  15. In my opinion, pop culture is a collection of our society's most valued and most widely known art, music, and people. Anything from music videos to internet memes can be considered to be pop culture if it is widely accepted and influential to society. We use this idea of popularity amongst these different categories to determine how we behave and what we deem as being acceptable. Pop culture has a larger impact on our lives than many people may be willing to admit. Images portrayed by our most popular celebrities are often interpreted to be what is seen as acceptable in society. Women are pressured to be seen as society's standard of beautiful. Men feel pressured to be seen as the money makers. Our pop culture also has a large impact on our current violence issues. With rappers making music about selling drugs and "gang banging", it's easy to see why our younger generations are so inclined to turn to this lifestyle. The music we listen to and the images we are exposed to can also have a positive effect. When influential leaders are given the spotlight in pop culture, people are more willing to listen to their messages. With this power, many people can leave a positive impact on society. Below is a link to the Top 10 Most Influential Songs That Changed History. With the right mindset, people can use the power that pop culture has on society to portray a much more positive message and change the world.

  16. Pop culture has shaped America society over time. What was supposed to be a way to keep up with friends and with the newest gossip or fashions and the “it” styles of the time rapidly became a medium for so much more. Pop culture has only left a negative imprint on American society. Normalizing words that may have been looked down upon for example bitch, and fuck boy. Those words are found in almost any modern Hip-Hop song as well in social media to refer to someone by their gender or how they might have perceived their behavior. Conational changes on existing words that only apply to the younger crowds such as “shade”, “roast” has drawn an invisible line for people who know what these words mean and for those who don’t. A stereotype has been put on their generation; and with any stereotyping comes hatred. The negative messages being send from one username to another, which includes celebrities. Before celebrities would have to think twice before talking to the press or bad publicity. In this day and age if you tear someone’s self-esteem down you are celebrated. Women are idolized as sex tools and are disregarded otherwise. But as much as we can all acknowledge those things and state what is wrong with our society or why pop culture is so negative, I’m sure that most of us indulge in that culture at the same time. We can identify why it’s not good for us but still be able to listen to those derogatory terms in our music or to read posts and laugh when someone is made fun of. The irony. I think a good name for this blog would the Irony culture; because we contradict ourselves.

  17. Pop culture is essentially a term to describe what is happening right now, nothing more, nothing less. It has no real significance because it changes nothing. If you look back at the trends from previous decades, you would notice that there isn’t much of a difference between what was happening then and what is happening now. The music has the similar content, the fashions were all considered scandalous, the technology was the current must have. The only thing that happens is a revamp. Instead of marlin Monroe, there’s a Kim Kardashian. Instead of Mariah Carey, there is an Ariana Grande. Instead of Tupac, there is a j Cole. For everything that there was then there is now and there will be another one in the future. We aren’t doing anything new; it’s just a cycle. So to speak of pop culture as this important life changing entity is just unnecessary. it has no true importance so it can’t have a positive or negative influence on society. The real influence on society comes from the surrounding of each individual. Therefore, its primarily up to the parents of each individual to decide what the influence will be, whether it will be education, ideas, religion, or music. So, if the parent allows the child to watch vulgar shows, and listen to vulgar music, that is their business and the results of their child would be there responsibility, and theirs alone. We can’t just blame “pop culture” for the results of our youth because it isn’t a real thing.

    1. It is true that it is primarily up to the parents of each individual to decide what influences their children. However, there is only so much parents can protect their children from before it is exposed to them. Kids can learn it from their friends and the internet. Parents can only go so far before their protection is bypassed due to outside influences.

  18. I personally feel that pop culture has a detrimental impact on our american society. in a sense, pop culture shapes the way many people see things and this can lead to less and less individuality. whether it be music, clothing, or language; a large number of people will try to gravitate towards the popular trend, while that may not be what that individual truly is. i think if people would utilize mediums of pop culture in a different way, things would be better. rather than the approach of materialism and conformity (which is often subliminal), it would inspire more individual creativity if people simply thought of it as "theory not truth". people often speak of what they do not know and join in the popular opinion and this influences everything about what we do. for example, pop culture has a heavy influence on politics, which is one place where the individual opinion is more important than ever.

out of this class, i personally would like to learn how i can benefit from pop culture and hopefully gain some appreciation towards a topic I'm rather unfond of. lastly, i think Snoop Blogg is perfect.
