Pop culture is a global phenomenon. It ranges from media to art to fashion and varies based on regional and cultural interests. Like any form of entertainment it has positive and negative aspects. Although certain genres and types of pop culture are notorious for promoting a negative message, all genres can be linked to negative messages. Unfavorable activities can be conveyed as enticing especially in movies. “Pulp Fiction,” for example, sexualizes drugs, smoking, alcohol, and even violence, yet it is one of the most popular movies of all time. Violence, drugs and alcohol are not the only issues that arise in music, movies, and fashion, but also the sexualization of women and their bodies. This portrayal of the female physique has caused society to deem women and their different body types as unappealing or imperfect. By  doing this it causes women to over analyze theirs and other’s bodies.
Although a lot of negativity can be directed at pop culture, there is a positive side too. Pop culture in many cases promotes positive messages. To combat the “perfect” body issue many companies have begun selling and even modeling all sizes of clothing for women. In addition, models such as Ashley Graham have started positive body image campaigns to promote a healthy positive image for every type and size of woman. She uses social media to promote her campaign #swimsuitsforall, it is used to support every type of body from thin to plus, old to young, and everyone in between. Like Newton said, “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction,” in this case for every negative image, idea, or message there is a positive message being promoted to combat negativity.

From this class I hope to learn to clarify my writing and better analyze and critique mine and others’ works.
